Fugensha is pleased to present the solo exhibition Hiroshima Monument by Hiromi Tsuchida, starting from Friday, August 1 to Sunday, August 31, 2025. This exhibition commemorates the publication of the definitive version of Tsuchida’s lifelong project — Hiroshima Monument, published by Fugensha in the 80th year since the end of World War II.

Hiromi Tsuchida was born in Fukui Prefecture in 1939. He is a photographer who has consistently observed and documented the change in Japan with a critical perspective and a deep sense of curiosity. He is a documentarian who has used his camera to capture the evolution of Japanese society. On August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima city. In the city today, some structures, bridges, trees, and monuments have survived the catastrophic destruction of that day and continue to exist. Tsuchida’s project Hiroshima Monument, brings together photographic quadriptych, documenting 48 such “monuments” scattered across Hiroshima city. He photographed these sites from fixed positions approximately every decade from 1979 to 2025, spanning 45 years. This work forms part of his "Hiroshima Trilogy," alongside Hiroshima 1945–1979, which features interviews with atomic bomb survivors, and Hiroshima Collection, which documents atomic bomb-related artifacts. This trilogy could be considered to be the most significant series of his career.

Tsuchida believes that long-term observation of fixed points, particularly as decisive events fade and being forgotten, illuminates the continuity of the present with both the past and the future. Such a practice, he suggests, can even offer insight into the structure of our rapidly changing future. This large- scale project stems from the artist’s strong sense of mission — that the city of Hiroshima itself must be remembered as a “monument of the century.” Now, 80 years after the war, the work delivers a notion looking ahead to the 100th anniversary and beyond.

The photobook Hiroshima Monument is designed by Atsuki Kikuchi, who also designed the companion volume Hiroshima Collection (published by NHK Publishing), released around the same time. This definitive edition of the Hiroshima Monument series, coming 30 years after the 1995 publication Hiroshima Monument II (published by Toseisha), includes a text titled Zero Hour Monument by Toshiharu Ito, as well as a complete list of works. We hope you will take this opportunity to view the exhibition alongside the publication.
