Hiroshi Sugimoto, one of Japan's leading contemporary artists active worldwide, has a deep interest in Japanese Buddhist and Shinto art, which he has collected himself. He has discovered new beauty in artworks through his own eyes and has represented that beauty and its spirit through various exhibitions.
His interest in Kasuga art, in particular, is outstanding, and his reverence for Kasuga Myojin, the essence of beauty, led to the establishment of "Amachibanayama Kasuga Shrine" at Enoura Weather Station in March of this year by inviting the deity from Kasuga Taisha.
This year, for Kasuga Taisha, Kasuga Goshinrei will be relocated to Enoura Weather Station in the spring and Kasuga Wakamiya in the fall. In the fall, the reconstruction of Kasuga Wakamiya Shrine will be completed.
The National Treasure Hall of Kasuga Grand Shrine will hold a special exhibition, "Hiroshi Sugimoto - Kasuga no Mikoto no Mireo: Mikatayama and Enoura," from December 23, 2022, to March 13, 2023, in celebration of the ceremonial rebuilding of Kasuga Wakamiya Shrine. This exhibition, under the supervision of contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto, will showcase masterpieces of the Kasuga and Kasuga Wakamiya faiths, including several large-scale works on the theme of Kasuga. The exhibition will be held at the foot of Mount Mikanayama, the sacred place where the Kasuga faith was born and Kasuga Wakamiya was born. Guided by the keen sensibility of Hiroshi Sugimoto, we invite you to journey to the National Treasure Hall of Kasuga Taisha Shrine to discover new beauty.
