Throughout the tumultuous 20th century, Hisahito Yonekura continued to ponder the question, "What is art?" Born in Yamanashi in the late Meiji period (1868-1912), Yonekura was a self-taught painter and poet who was involved in Surrealism, which spread from France after World War I to the rest of the world. Surrealism is an artistic movement that attempts to express what lies beneath the human unconscious, free from the constraints and preconceptions of reason. Yonekura produced poetic and fantastic paintings at the "Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai," a prewar group of avant-garde painters, and the "Salon de Juan," which he founded after the war, while also working on literary works such as his poetry collection "Transparent Years" (1937).
This exhibition traces Yonekura's major works, mainly from the museum's collection, as well as works by painters Yonekura was involved with, such as Ichiro Fukuzawa and Noboru Kitawaki, and foreign artists who influenced Japanese painters of the time, such as Salvador Dalí and Max Ernst.
The exhibition also features works by foreign painters such as Salvador Dali and Max Ernst, who were influential to Japanese artists of the time.
