Hitoshi Okamoto is a magazine editor, an essayist, an exhibition supervisor, and more. Through these creative mediums and his unique style, Okamoto showcases his interests in various fields, from art and design to film and music. His activities are too broad to be summed into a single job title. What they have in common is that they all involve “editing” or connecting disparate things in a unique context. While an editor is not a writer, editing, like writing or painting, is an act of self-expression. In a tabloid booklet and gallery space, this exhibition will introduce the outputs of Hitoshi Okamoto’s editing and their background (inputs). An example of the outputs is the booklet to be newly published, whose feature theme is, “What is a good painting?” Okamoto is the producer and editor of the booklet, which will contain articles contributed by writers from various fields. The gallery space will exhibit the inputs, the items that are the source of Okamoto’s production and editing works. The space, arranged with things Okamoto cherishes and finds interesting, will surely give visitors a glimpse of his previous works. The recent popularization of social media has allowed anyone to have his or her media, making the act of editing more accessible to everyone. We hope this exhibition will inspire visitors to rethink their concept of editing and discover its creativity.
