The Shunyo-`kai is a Western-style painting organization founded in 1922 by Hoan Kosugi, which continues to this day. The founding members included Kosugi, Genichiro Adachi, Hakuyo Kurata, Tsunetomo Morita, Kanae Yamamoto, and Ryuzaburo Umehara, who had left the Western painting division of the Japan Art Institute, as well as Sodosha painters such as Shohachi Kimura and Kazumasa Nakagawa, and visiting artists such as Keishi Imazeki and Shozo Yamazaki, who were studying at the Japan Art Institute.
One of the trends during the pioneering period was an orientation toward Western-style Oriental painting, such as the Japaneseization of oil painting, and from the first exhibition, an "Ink and Drawing Room" was established, where ink paintings and drawings were displayed alongside oil paintings. The "Illustration Room" (1927, 5th Exhibition) and "Print Room" (1928, Print Room) were established after that, and the freedom to respect each member's individuality and not limit them to oil paintings alone was a characteristic that made the NMWA different from other art organizations.
In the pre-war period of the Showa era, painters such as Gyoji Nomiyama and Setsuko Migishi, who would go on to lead the postwar art world, were selected for the exhibition several times, which is also noteworthy as an example of the positive reception of fresh and innovative works.
This exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first exhibition in 1923 and looks back on the activities of the Shunyo-kai through the works of Hoan Kosugi and other painters associated with the Shunyo-kai, which are in the collection of Nikko City.
