Hogai Kano Exhibition

Shimonoseki City Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Hogai Kano
The work "Hibo Kannon" by Hogai Kano (1828-1888), who played an active role during the formative period of modern Japanese art, will be featured in this exhibition as a starting point for a narrative.

To start the narrative, the exhibition will showcase Kano's early works to his late works. In the first part, we will explore a narrative centered around "Hibo Kannon." This will include works created during his time at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, such as those seen in the works of Keichu Yamada and Shunso Hishida, as well as studies on "Hibo Kannon" by Shusui Okakura and Shotetsu Takaya, both counted among the Hogai Four Heavenly Kings. The exhibition will also introduce imitations of Kano's work.

In the second part, alongside another representative work, "Nio Capturing Oni," and Buddhist-themed works from Kano's later years, this exhibition will present how Kano's influence is present in contemporary art.

Through imitations of Kano's works and pieces inspired by them, this exhibition will reconsider Kano's impact on modern and contemporary art.
