The "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" series on view in this exhibition is Hokusai Katsushika's (1760-1849) ukiyo-e series featuring Mount Fuji and is considered his masterpiece. The series was originally published with 36 paintings, but due to popular demand, 10 were added, bringing the total to 46.
Known as the "Big Wave," this world-famous work was used in the design of the new 1,000-yen bill. The three paintings in the series, "Kanagawa Okinamiura," commonly known as "Red Fuji," "Triumphant Weather," and "Black Fuji," known as "Yamashita White Rain," are known as the "Three Roles" and are regarded as the most artistic works in the series.
In addition to these three works, this exhibition also features an indigo print of "Triumphant Weather," called "Ao Fuji" (Blue Fuji), of which only seven are known to exist. This exhibition is a rare opportunity for visitors to compare and contrast "Aka Fuji" and "Ao Fuji."
