Honen Tsukioka "The Last Ukiyo-e Master"

Ashiya City Museum of Art and History

Artists

Honen Tsukioka
Born in Shimbashi, Edo (Tokyo), Honen Tsukioka (1839-1892) studied under Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1797₋1861) at the age of 12 and made his debut in the art world at 15.

Tsukioka's flexible ideas and strong artistic spirit, while incorporating the realism of Western painting, created a powerful spark at the end of the history of Ukiyo-e. Although he began his career focusing on samurai and historical paintings inherited from his master, he also left behind many works reflecting the turbulent history of the Meiji Restoration.

This exhibition introduces a number of his fascinating works, including "Shinkei Sanjurokai-sen," a collection of 36 ghosts and monsters, and "Tsuki Hyakkyo," one of Tsukioka's most famous works.
