The main building and studio of the Hoshun Yamaguchi Memorial Hall were registered as National Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 27, 2023. Furthermore, the studio is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year since its completion. The museum, operated by the JR Tokai Lifelong Learning Foundation, perceives this as an opportunity to reaffirm and disseminate the charm of the museum as the former residence of Hoshun Yamaguchi. This exhibition is in commemoration of the registration of the tangible cultural property.

The museum is the former residence where the Japanese painter Hoshun Yamaguchi (1893-1971) spent about 23 years from 1948 until his passing in 1971. After purchasing the existing two-story wooden house as his residence, Yusei carried out renovations and expansions, including the studio, with the architect Isoya Yoshida (1894-1974).

Yamaguchi and Yoshida entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1915 and graduated together in 1923. Since then, they maintained a close relationship, with Yoshida not only designing Yamaguchi's home and studio but also incorporating Yamaguchi's work into the buildings he designed. Despite the differences between painting and architecture, the two shared a strong artistic bond and can be considered comrades living in the same era. The former residence renovated and expanded by Yoshida based on Yamaguchi's preferences is a true collaboration between the two artists.

This exhibition focuses on the studios designed by Ikuhachi before and after World War II, exploring the trajectory of Yamaguchi and Yoshida's interaction within the spaces created by Yoshida. Alongside the artworks, visitors can appreciate the allure of the former Hoshun Yamaguchi Residence, where the artistic sensibilities of Yusei and Ikuhachi resonate, including the building and the garden that sometimes served as motifs for the artworks.
