Iconic Moments from History of Modern Art in Iwate: With a Focus on the Museum Collection

Iwate Museum of Art
Finished
This exhibition attempts to unravel Morioka’s art history by highlighting some symbolic art exhibitions and events held in Morioka. The exhibition focuses on the seventy years from 1910, when Iwate prefecture's first Western-style painting group, the Hokkokai, held its first exhibition, to 1980, when the Iwate Prefectural Museum opened to showcase the collection of works by Iwate’s artists. Years later, the Iwate Prefectural Museum’s art collection was inherited by the Iwate Museum of Art.

The exhibition features approximately 150 works including the collections of individuals and companies in Iwate prefecture. Tracing the history of Iwate's artists and their works means tracing back the history of the museum's collection. We hope that it will provide an opportunity to reconsider the art of Iwate and the museum’s collection.
