Iittala - Stars of Finnish Glass

Museum “Eki” Kyoto
Finished
Iittala, a lifestyle brand representing Finland, originated from a glass factory established in 1881 in the village of Iittala in southern Finland. The brand has walked alongside architects and designers such as Alvar Aalto and Kai Franck, who led the development of Finnish design. Guided by their philosophy of providing beauty and functionality to everyone, the products they have created continue to be loved worldwide.

To commemorate the 140th anniversary of Iittala's founding, this exhibition reconstructs a showcase held by the Finnish Design Museum in 2021. For the Japan exhibition, an additional section focusing on the relationship between Ittala and Japan is included. The exhibition delves into Ittala's journey, featuring classic designs from the mid-20th century to modern glass design, incorporating ceramics, porcelain, video, and installations. Through artworks and materials, it explores the techniques, philosophy, and aesthetic design of Ittala. By examining the history of Ittala's products, one can see how deeply intertwined it is with design history, Finnish culture and social conditions, and changes in people's lifestyles.
