Ikuta Collection Drum Body

National Museum of Japanese History
Finished
The Ikuta Collection is a collection of Noh related items collected over two generations by Ikuta Hide (1857-1906), known for his contributions to the founding of the beer industry from the Meiji to Taisho periods, and his eldest son Ikuta Koichi (Tsutsuya, 1882-1933), who devoted himself to studying drum drums. Four different instruments with different characteristics are used in Noh - the small drum, the large drum, the taiko drum, and the Noh flute - but the core of this collection is 92 small drum drums, that is, the tubes that resonate the sound of the small drum. Unlike materials handed down from families who have been involved in Noh for generations or feudal lords, the collection was collected from a research perspective, and is characterized by being a systematic collection that is not biased towards the preferences of any particular school (school), and includes drum drums from a wide range of periods from the Muromachi period to the Taisho period.

This special exhibition will display the main materials from the Ikuta Collection, which has been highly acclaimed as a research resource for the history of music and musical instruments, technology, and art, including the small drum body, large drum body, and taiko drum body. Through the various parts that make up the drum, the musical instrument manufacturing techniques symbolized by the planed marks inside the drum body, the colorful lacquer decoration on the surface of the drum body, and the background to the establishment of the collection, we will introduce a part of the Noh culture that developed and flourished from the Muromachi period to the Edo period, and was passed down to modern times and still lives on as a traditional performing art.
