Flamenco, bullfights, Don Quixote, the Alhambra... many of the images we associate with Spain were created by 19th-century visitors to the country. The important medium that shaped and distributed these images was prints, which could be printed in multiple editions and easily transported.
This exhibition focuses on the historical development of Spanish prints from the 17th century through Goya, Picasso, Miró, and Tàpies, as well as 19th century prints by British and French artists such as Delacroix and Manet, to explore how "images" of Spanish culture and art were created and transmitted. The exhibition includes books, photographs, and posters.
The works on display, including books, photographs, posters, and other artworks, will be borrowed from approximately 40 locations throughout Japan, including the collection of the National Museum of Western Art, making this the first-ever gathering of masterpieces of Spanish prints from all over Japan.
