In the Footsteps of the Avant-garde - Taro Okamoto and His Time

Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki
Until Jul 7

Artists

Taro Okamoto, Shozo Kitadai, Saori Akutagawa et al.
At the age of 18, Taro Okamoto dropped out of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (now Tokyo University of the Arts) and followed his parents to Paris. In Paris, where he spent his 20s, he became the youngest artist to join the local abstract art group "Astraxion Création" and also participated in "Asefal," a group led by Bataille, where he interacted with radical artistic and ideological groups.

After returning to Japan and serving in the military, he worked with literary figures such as Seiki Hanada in the "Night Club," which became the starting point for the avant-garde art movement in postwar Tokyo. From here, various artistic movements were born, and it became a gathering place for writers. Taro Okamoto was a free and vigorous artist who traversed genres, never taking on apprentices throughout his life, and disliking the idea of crowds. The interaction and connection with these friends are also a strong factor in the creation of their works.

From the museum collection, this exhibition introduces the activities of Taro Okamoto and his contemporaries with whom he interacted.
