Integrating Technology & Art through Photography: Tokyo Polytechnic University 100th Anniversary Exhibition

The year 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Tokyo Polytechnic University.

To commemorate this occasion, the exhibition will trace the history and traditions of the Tokyo Polytechnic University and introduce the relationship between the university and the Japanese photography industry, as well as the characteristics of the university, which has developed from its origins in education and research in photography, which fuses technology and art, into a university with a Faculty of Engineering and a Faculty of Fine Arts.

The exhibition is divided into four parts. The first part, "Craft History," explores the roots of photography education in Japan and traces its history from its founding in 1923 as the cutting-edge photography specialized school, known as the Konishi Shashin Specialist School, to the present.

The second part, "Graduates in Action," showcases the diverse works of photography alumni.

The third part, "Shadai Gallery Collection," features the collection of photographic artworks from the Shadai Gallery, a public facility known for its extensive photography collection at Tokyo Polytechnic University.

The fourth part, "Towards the Next 100 Years," introduces projects and media art created through collaborative research between the engineering and art departments of Tokyo Polytechnic University, aiming to shape the future.
