GALLERY MoMo Ryogoku is pleased to present the group exhibition "Interplay of Materials" from Saturday, April 11, to Saturday, May 9, 2026.
This exhibition focuses on the concept of "material" within artistic practice, providing a cross-sectional look at the expressions of artists from diverse backgrounds and methodologies. Transcending traditional genres such as painting and sculpture, the participating artists confront their chosen materials to develop works that encapsulate their inherent characteristics, temporality, and physicality, as well as their cultural and social contexts.
The materials featured in this exhibition are wide-ranging, including silicone rubber, fur, FRP, washi paper, charcoal, human hair, and cloisonné. These are presented not merely as physical matter but as entities imbued with memory, history, traces of life, and social significance.
The works, crafted from these varied substances, transcend their sheer materiality to manifest within the space as traces of the artists' thoughts and actions. Here, the material is far more than a mere means to an end; it is an integral element in the creation of meaning and, at times, becomes the primary subject itself.
Through this exhibition, we return to the fundamental question: "What is a material?" A material is a physical substance, but it is simultaneously a vessel for time, memory, the body, and culture—a medium that connects the work with the viewer.
We invite you to experience the expansion of sensation and thought evoked by each work in this intersection of diverse materials.
