Isamu Fukui
Isamu Fukui was born in 1908 in Ayabe City, Kyoto Prefecture. After graduating from the Kyoto Prefectural Normal School, Fukui began working at Kyoto City Shimo-Toba Elementary School, where he started learning to paint alongside his teaching duties. Around 1930, he attended the Kansai Art Academy and studied under Jutaro Kuroda. Fukui presented his works at the Nika Exhibition and the Kyoto City Art Exhibition (Shiten), gaining experience as a painter.

After the war, he continued to teach at Kyoto City elementary and junior high schools while also engaging in creative activities based at the Action Art Association. Through his life as an educator, Fukui developed a deeply serene painting world, continuously observing motifs such as persimmons, pomegranates, and poppies, as well as the landscapes of Kameoka, which became his final home. In his paintings, solid "things" float quietly within softly enveloping backgrounds. Junichi Mukai, a painter from the Action Art Association, referred to Fukui as "Mokushitei."

This exhibition showcases the soft and rich world of Isamu Fukui's paintings, depicting familiar motifs and landscapes based in the foggy Kameoka basin.
