Izumo Kagura

Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo
Finished
Kagura is one of the representative folk performing arts of Shimane Prefecture. Currently, Izumo Kagura is performed by about 70 groups in the Izumo region in the eastern part of the prefecture.

Izumo is widely known as the "land of myths," and many people may associate Izumo Kagura with masked dramas based on the myths of the Chiki period, such as the handing over of the country and the conquest of the giant serpent. However, in addition to entertaining performances based on myths and legends, Izumo Kagura has also been handed down locally through ritualistic performances and "takusen" rituals, in which the voice of a deity is heard through kamigakari.

This exhibition explores the relationship between the people of Izumo and kagura, and the Izumo kagura as a performing art rooted in the region, through historical documents that tell the history and characteristics of Izumo kagura and tools such as kagura masks.
