Japanese Graphic Designers and Prints

Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts
Until May 26

Artists

Kazumasa Nagai, Tadanori Yokoo, Makoto Wada et al.
The term "graphic designer" became known in Japan in the 1950s during the post-war reconstruction period. In 1951, the Japan Advertising Art Association (commonly known as Nikkoku-bi) was established nationwide, and at the same time, the advertising agency Light Publicity was founded. Furthermore, in 1959, the Japan Design Center, which brought together leading authors, was also launched. The era when young graphic designers reached adulthood after the end of the war, striving together and encouraging each other, could be called the "youth" of the Japanese design world.

In the process of handling various advertising materials, graphic designers often showed interest in "prints," which were often the same printing materials. Unlike advertising work that required "teamwork and anonymous acts," prints, where they could fully express their individuality, must have exerted a strong appeal.

This exhibition will introduce about 40 prints of graphic designers who have been active from the post-war period to the present, focusing on Kazumasa Nagai (born in 1929), Tadanori Yokoo (born in 1936), and Makoto Wada (1936-2019).
