Artists

Jean Jullien, Nicolas Jullien
Jean Jullien was born in France in 1983, graduated from Central Saint Martins in London in 2008, and received his MFA from the Royal College of Art in 2010. He has worked as an illustrator for many prominent clients including The New York Times, National Geographic, Hermès, and Vogue, but in recent years he has energetically focused on creating installations using canvas and three-dimensional works. In addition to his current large installation at Ginza Six in Tokyo, Jean has had successful solo museum exhibitions such as "Studiolo" (Mima Museum, Brussels, 2023) and "Then, There," (Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul, 2022). (Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul, 2022).

In this exhibition, Nicolas Jullien will present a series of new paintings, painted with a rare and vivid sensibility, ranging from seascapes of Lesconil in his native Brittany to scenes he recorded during a visit to Tokyo last year.

Nicolas, born in 1985, is a sculptor, musician, and filmmaker based in Paris. He has been creating electronic music since 2005 and has worked extensively on solo albums, films, artist videos, and soundtracks for immersive installations.

In recent years, with the support of his brother Jean, he has immersed himself in the creation of wood sculptures and is actively engaged in exhibitions. His works, with their witty playfulness, vivid colors, and friendly forms, coupled with Nicolas' soft personality, are evolving daily in a pleasant way. Nicolas also devotes himself to animated productions as Jullian Brothers Studio with his brother Jean.

The name "Gathering" comes from the card game "Magic: The Gathering," which Jean and Nicolas play daily. The theme of this exhibition is to summon the magic and fantasy they discover in their daily lives into their artwork.

For Jean, the silhouettes of people playing on the beach turn into zombies, surfers in the morning mist become ghosts, and divers turn into mermaids. The titles of each piece will give the viewer a glimpse into the fictional narrative Jean has discovered.

Nicolas' installation, on the other hand, features anthropomorphic creatures. These characters invite us into a story yet to be told. A strange and eerie soundtrack played by these various creatures will be played at the exhibition venue. Nanzuka 2G will also present an installation of submarines.

This exhibition will take the form of a two-person show by Jean and his brother Nicolas, and at Jingumae Nazuka Underground, Jean's paintings will be exhibited on the first floor and Nicolas' wood sculptures will be exhibited on the second floor.

In addition, 3110NZ by LDH Kitchen and Nazuka 2G will exhibit Jean's and Nirako's works, respectively. The brothers, who are usually very close, have an exquisite relationship that complements each other creatively as well. Nicolas' sculptures are more humorous and witty, while his softer impression gives Jean's painting more breadth. Jean's pure creativity also gives Nicolas's sculptures a narrative and time frame. The free and elegant ideas of these two artists, which grab our hearts and minds in an instant and never let go, seem to powerfully testify to the excellence of their expressive activities.

Jean and Nicolas will be visiting Japan for this exhibition, and an opening reception will be held at Nanzuka Underground in Jingumae on Friday, October 6, from 17:00 - 20:00. In the afternoon of October 7 (Sat), Jean will have an autographing session at NouNou's popup currently being held at Ginza Six.
