This exhibition focuses on the extensive original painting display that delves into the true nature of painter Jimmy Onishi's creative process, influenced by the "places" that have shaped his work. Onishi began painting earnestly in 1992, sparked by a television program's concept. Around the same time, he received advice from his admired artist, Taro Okamoto: "Don't worry about the square frame, let your canvas protrude." This led him to seriously pursue painting. His initial action was to quit his career as a comedian and move to Spain. Living in Spain significantly altered Onishi's artistic style, a transformation evident in his subsequent artworks. He continued to travel the world, drawing inspiration from various cities and encounters with people, animals, and objects. In 2022, Onishi celebrated 30 years of his artistic career with the exhibition "Pop Out," touring ten cities across Japan.
"At each place, I imagine myself living there forever and paint."
This exhibition showcases Onishi's experiences and emotions at each location alongside his original paintings, delving into the painter's thoughts and creative mechanisms. Moreover, Onishi visits and lives in the exhibition locations, engaging with local communities and treating each place as his "hometown" to create new work. Unlike the previous national tour, this "Hometown" exhibition will be held in multiple locations across Japan, allowing Jimmy Onishi's artworks to continue evolving in new directions.
