Born in Japan and raised in Hawaii until age 6, Jinya Yamakawa immersed himself in Japanese culture upon returning to Japan while attending an International High School. His passion for art blossomed, leading him to study Fine Art and acquire technical skills at The New School's Parsons School of Design. The focal point of Yamakawa's work lies in the narrative centered around the concept of "Meltdown." With masterful brushwork and meticulous attention to detail, he seamlessly merges the boundaries between subject and background, creating mesmerizing illusions of camouflage. In doing so, he adeptly addresses profound themes related to power dynamics, cultural nuances, and the complexity of human psychology. Yamakawa's vision extends beyond the surface, inviting viewers to explore the hidden layers within his pieces. Through his brushwork, he weaves his narrative, enticing viewers to stimulate their imagination and even challenge their perceptions. His work transcends the confines of traditional art, offering glimpses into the profound complexity of the human experience. Inspired by his multicultural upbringing and personal experiences, Yamakawa's art resonates with a diverse audience, prompting introspection and dialogue while visually exploring the human condition.
In October 2023, he successfully held his first solo exhibition, "First or Last," in Seoul, South Korea. And now, he presents his latest exhibition, "Calculated Risk." For this showcase, he will exhibit new works, collaborative sculptures with Hiromi Inoue, and painting pieces on The Tote Bag. Limited edition prints will also be available for purchase.
