José Parlá
Pola Museum Annex(Ginza)and KOTARO NUKAGA(Roppongi)are pleased to present “Home Away from Home,” a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed New York based artist José Parlá, opening concurrently on June 20, 2025. Through the common keyword of “Japan” in the two venues, the former focuses on Parlá’s substantial works to date and tracing his artistic practice and interactions with creators, and the latter presents his new paintings.

Born in Miami in 1973, Parlá grew up in the diverse immigrant cultures of the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Cuba, which has significantly influenced his understanding of art and urban life. Known for his distinctive calligraphy and layered painting style, Parlá’s work captures the memories and traces left on the walls, which also embody his own experiences. His travelling around the world have fostered dialogues with various cities and diverse expressions that have inspired him to cultivate a visual language characterized by hybrid forms of abstractions. His art poetically challenges concepts of language, politics, identity, and our definitions of place and space. Parlá’s approach to mark-making is both physical and textural, integrating bodily gestures into a painterly stream of consciousness that features aspects of addition, erasure, and layering, thereby questioning the status quo of visual culture.

“Home Away from Home” presents his works from the perspective of a landscape that transcends a single “home,” constantly evolving and shaped by memory, movement, and human connections. Since 1999, Parlá has visited Japan numerous times and has been deeply influenced by the climate and cultural styles. The exhibition at Pola Museum Annex will showcase his extensive body of work, including Bizen pottery created during his residency at a kiln, collaborations with Japanese artists and fashion designers, and 18 artworks, including a new large-scale painting themed around Tokyo. It will highlight how Parlá’s expressions are shaped by various elements such as travel, urban encounters, collaborations, historical events, memories, and emotions.

KOTARO NUKAGA will feature new paintings inspired by Parlá’s time spent and connections he made in Japan. For Parlá, who has experienced the many facets of Japanese cities and formed bonds with friends and artists, the new works are “a tribute to my friends and the moments that enriched my artistic journey.”
