Artists

Jun Nishikawa
This exhibition features cityscapes of Kyoto painted by Jun Nishikawa (1886-1974), a Western-style painter from Kyoto who was active from the late Meiji period to the Showa period. Nishikawa studied at the Muromachi Painting School of Menro Kashiki, the Shogoin Western-style painting school of Chu Asai, and the Kansai Art Institute in the late Meiji period, and left many excellent drawings. His pencil drawings of landscapes of Okazaki, Ginkakuji Temple Road, Shirakawa Village, Jodoji Village, etc., convey the conditions of those days to the present.

In addition to landscapes, there are portrait sketches under the guidance of Chu Asai and sketches of animals seen at the Kyoto City Zoo, which opened in 1903, showing the high level of drawing techniques at the painting school in the late Meiji period.

In the Showa period (1926-1989), Nishikawa drew streetscapes of old Kyoto from memory and left over 300 works as "Kyoto Houses". His works, which often depict the face of Kyoto, evoke nostalgic memories that lie dormant in people's minds.

This exhibition introduces a part of Nishikawa's painting career related to the Kyoto landscape, including watercolor and oil paintings, centering on his early Meiji period sketches.
