Kansetsu Hashimoto
At the height of the modern Japanese painting world, one artist stood apart with an overwhelming and commanding presence — Hashimoto Kansetsu (1883–1945).

Born in Kobe, Kansetsu apprenticed at the age of 12 to Kataoka Kōkō, a painter of the Shijō school, before moving to Kyoto at 20 to study under the renowned master Takeuchi Seihō. His extraordinary talent blossomed early: at just 25, he achieved his first acceptance into the prestigious Bunten exhibition. He went on to earn successive recognition year after year, eventually serving as a juror for the Imperial Fine Arts Academy Exhibition (Teiten), as an Imperial Household Artist, and as a member of the Imperial Art Academy — cementing his place at the very center of the Japanese art world.

Raised in a family of scholars, Kansetsu grew up immersed in Chinese classical literature and philosophy, a foundation that would deeply shape his art. Drawing on this rich cultural heritage, he created numerous works inspired by Chinese classical literature and legends, as well as landscape paintings in the sansui tradition. By blending the spirit of traditional Southern-style painting (Nanga) with modern realism, he forged a distinctive style known as Shin-Nanga — “New Southern Painting.” In his later years, he broke new ground with animal paintings of remarkable observational precision and expressive power.

This exhibition is presented with the full cooperation of Hakusasonsō Hashimoto Kansetsu Memorial Museum in Kyoto, and brings together a rare collection of the artist’s finest works — including the celebrated folding screen paintings Mulan and Pipa Xing, the masterful animal painting Autumn Cosmos and an Old Monkey, the never-before-exhibited-outside-the-museum work Pine Stream, Pure Resonance, and Spring Dawn over the Eastern Sea, believed to be Kansetsu’s final painting.
