Method Inc. is pleased to present “Uncovering Functionality — 使えるを見つける” a solo exhibition by artist and metalworker Kathleen Reilly, held at (PLACE) by method from December 4 to 14, 2025. Scottish-born Kathleen Reilly studied Silversmithing and Jewellery at The Glasgow School of Art and completed her MA at the Royal College of Art in London. In 2018, her encounter with the exhibition Biology of Metal: Craftsmanship in Tsubame-Sanjo at Japan House London led her to discover the exceptional craftsmanship of the Tsubame-Sanjo region.
In 2019, she came to Japan as a Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation scholar and spent two years training in Tsubame, Niigata. In 2022, her knife design “Oku”—created in collaboration with artisans in Tsubame-Sanjo and craftsmen at Karimoku—received the Dezeen Awards prize for Homeware Design of the Year.
This exhibition commemorates the first anniversary of the London launch of “Oku.” Through film works and a selection of crafted objects that quietly enrich daily life, the exhibition invites viewers to reconsider how thoughtfully made tools influence our gestures, habits, and surroundings.
By presenting works by carefully selected British designers and makers, the exhibition highlights the potential embedded in objects—and offers moments of discovery that prompt reflection on the cultural perspectives of both Japan and the UK.
