Katsu Aoki began his career as a commissioned photographer for Japan Airlines in 1970, starting his career as an aviation photographer. For the past 54 years, he has continued to express the charm of airplanes through photography, establishing himself as a leading aviation photographer.
This exhibition showcases 59 works (all in black and white) taken by Mr. Aoki between 1970 and 1995 when he began photographing passenger planes.
In 1970, Japan Airlines' Boeing 747 jumbo jet began service on the Pacific route, marking the beginning of the full-scale era of mass transportation. Aoki has captured the transitional period from the era when airports like Narita Airport in 1978 and Kansai International Airport in 1994 opened and passenger planes became more common. His photographs include valuable images such as the first domestically produced post-war passenger plane, the Japan Aircraft Manufacturing YS-11, which passed overhead with the distinctive sound of its dart engine; the Boeing 737, affectionately known as the "mini jumbo," which excelled in short takeoff and landing distances on local routes; and the unique formation flight of two large aircraft flying alternately. These works evoke the beauty, strength, and history of airplanes.
