Kawase Tomoe Sui (1883-1957) was a woodblock print artist active from the Taisho to Showa periods. In an era of rapid changes in towns and landscapes due to the wave of modernization, Kawase traveled throughout Japan and continued to depict the landscapes he encountered throughout his life, earning him the nickname "the poet of the traveler's sentiment. The expressive world of Tomoe Sui's works, which are in tune with the seasons, weather, and the changing of time, are still loved both in Japan and abroad.
Tomoe's production was supported by Shozaburo Watanabe, a woodblock printmaker who promoted "shin-hanga," a new generation of woodblock prints that replaced ukiyo-e prints. While maintaining the advanced traditional techniques of collaboration with craftsmen, which were in decline at the time, the two artists introduced a new sense of color and expression, aiming to create a woodblock print art that would be accepted overseas.
This exhibition focuses on representative series of works from their early years to their later years. It will be an opportunity to fully appreciate the charm of Tomosui's art while tracing his artistic career. The exhibition will also focus on the connection with Kagoshima, introducing works he painted during his travels in Kagoshima and works by local artist Goyo Hashiguchi, who also produced new prints under Shozaburo Watanabe. Please enjoy a nostalgic yet new journey through the heartwarming beauty of landscapes.
