Keiichiro Kume - Selected Masterpieces from the Japanese Painting Collection

Kume Museum of Art
Finished
Keiichiro Kume, who studied art in France, worked with Seiki Kuroda and others to introduce authentic Western art to Meiji-era Japan. Not only did he practice the Western way of art, but his lifestyle strongly reflected the sense of style he had acquired in France at a young age, as evidenced by his appearance, which led him to be mistaken for a foreigner and to be described as "half-Western" by his father, Kunitake Kume, a historian.

In his later years, however, his greatest joy was collecting Japanese art, and it is said that he went to auctions every week. This exhibition introduces seasonal masterpieces from this collection, which includes a wide range of works from old paintings, Kano school, ukiyo-e, literati paintings, and Chinese paintings, all of which share a certain elegance and taste for painting.
