Kiichi Sumikawa (1931- ) is a contemporary sculptor from Muikaichi Town (now Yoshika Town), Kanzoku County, Shimane Prefecture. In addition to having created approximately 100 outdoor sculptures throughout Japan, he has received high acclaim for his work in urban architectural design and environmental modeling, including supervising the design of the Tokyo Sky Tree®. He has also served as professor and president of the Tokyo University of the Arts, his alma mater, and has continued his energetic creative activities in the Tokyo metropolitan area. For these numerous achievements, he has been awarded the Order of Cultural Merit, which he will receive in 2020.
This exhibition introduces approximately 50 selected sculptures from the 120 sculptures donated to Shimane Prefecture in FY2020 and FY2021, as well as a large number of artist materials donated with the works, including sketches, drawings, drafts, maquettes, plaster casts, and collected items of outdoor sculptures, all of which have not been shown in public until now.
