Kim Woojin
Kim Woojin, born in 1976, completed his studies at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2012 and earned his doctoral degree from Ewha Womans University in 2019. He has held solo exhibitions in Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, and participated in numerous residency programs such as Honmoku Artist Residency (Yokohama), Tokyo Arts and Space (Tokyo), and MMCA Goyang Residency (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gyeonggi-do, Korea).

Kim has explored the hidden frames within communities during residency programs, investigating the societal conditions under which these frames function and their impact on individuals. He aims to challenge unconscious social norms like our rigid beliefs in concepts such as "good/bad" and "truth/lie."

The exhibition will feature works from his notable project "Memories Project," including series like "The Prelude of The Perfect Ending" and "The Ghost, Sea and Moebius Loop," as well as new works themed on the endangered languages Ainu and Uchinaaguchi from Hokkaido and Okinawa, titled "And, I decide to make a short play."

"The Prelude of The Perfect Ending" is an audiovisual work based on interviews across various generations about minority languages spoken in places like Taiwan, Jeju Island (Korea), and Hong Kong. The faces of the actual speakers are not shown; instead, the process of molding clay-like materials into molds by human hands is depicted. This process resembles how fixed concepts are formed in people's lives, highlighting language changes through personal experiences and questioning the frameworks and boundaries created within.

In studying disappearing languages, Kim noticed that minority languages are not translated on the internet. Combining this with the situation of regional cities lost due to population concentration in urban areas, he created "The Ghost, Sea and Moebius Loop."

In his new work "And, I Decide to Make a Short Play," based on interviews with speakers of Ainu and Uchinaaguchi, Kim constructs a short play by connecting disjointed interviews. While Japanese (and English) translations are relied upon by many viewers to understand these languages, AI-translated text often fails to convey the intended meaning, causing discomfort. Partially extracted words, detached from their contexts, obscure their true intentions, leading viewers to question even the supposedly understandable Japanese words.

Through various artistic devices, Kim Woojin challenges himself and viewers with a video work that raises several questions.

Additionally, his works are also exhibited at Tokyo Arts and Space Hongo from June 29th (Saturday) to August 4th (Sunday) in the "Particle Breath Tokyo Arts and Space Residency 2024 Results Exhibition."
