Kiyoshi Awazu
Kiyoshi Awazu (1929-2009) is known as one of Japan's leading graphic designers. From 1973 to 2005, he was responsible for the poster design of the "UBE Biennale (Contemporary Japanese Sculpture Exhibition)," an outdoor sculpture exhibition held by Ube City since 1961. The city has preserved numerous B1 to B2 size posters. This exhibition introduces the characteristics of Awazu's posters, the era in which unique designs were born, and the printing technologies that supported the beautiful and colorful finish through the posters of this outdoor sculpture exhibition.

"Hybridization creates new culture" ("Design Night Lecture," 1974) is a quote from Awazu. His posters are adorned with seemingly unrelated motifs such as fingerprints, impressions, turtles, and cows. These motifs reflect Awazu's awareness of social issues such as the information society and environmental problems. Within a single poster, images meet, and "crossbreeding" beyond genres occurs, reminiscent of "sculpture" and "outdoor space." Posters are also taken to the streets, and by being seen by people, they provoke further "crossbreeding." This is similar to the way sculptures displayed outdoors are perceived. The image of the outdoor sculpture exhibition in Ube City may have been created along with Awazu's posters.

Awazu positively embraced "printing" and "mass production," considering replication as "truth." At the venue, there will be a corner where visitors can pick up and closely appreciate Awazu's posters. By adding various images to the posters of the outdoor sculpture exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the captivating design charm of Kiyoshi Awazu, who created a world full of curiosity.
