Kiyoshi Hasegawa
Kiyoshi Hasegawa (1891-1980) is a copperplate printmaker whose name is engraved in the history of 20th-century printmaking. Spending his youth during the Taisho period, Hasegawa played a pioneering role in the creation of Japanese creative printmaking. In 1918, he traveled to France to learn copperplate printmaking techniques and thereafter continued his production using various copperplate techniques without returning to Japan. His significant achievement lies in the revival of the copperplate technique "Manière Noire" (mezzotint), which had fallen out of use since the advent of photography in the 19th century. His serene and profound works are highly regarded internationally.

Recently, the museum received a deposit of a collection of Kiyoshi Hasegawa's works, including valuable pieces such as pencil drawings, trial proofs, and woodblock prints from before his journey to France. This exhibition, the first opportunity to see the full extent of this excellent private collection, divides 115 pieces, including works from the collection, into five chapters to trace the development of his artistic career.
