Kobayashi Kokei and Hayami Gyoshū ―Two Influential Masters in the Japanese Modern Art World

Yamatane Museum of Art

Artists

Kokei Kobayashi, Gyoshu Hayami
Kokei Kobayashi (1883-1957) and Gosyu Hayami (1894-1935) left a significant mark on the history of modern Japanese painting. Although there is an 11-year age difference between the two artists, many similarities can be found when tracing their artistic careers.

Both Kobayashi and Hayami began their careers painting history and portraits, and both were active in the Inten Exhibition, which was re-established in 1914, but their styles changed toward the middle of the Taisho period (1912-1925) to one of thorough realism with detailed depiction. They also shared the support of the industrialist Sankei Hara. Through their respective experiences in Europe, Kobayashi awakened to the "beauty of the line" of Oriental painting and established his own style, while Hayami broke new ground in flower-and-bird paintings based on portraits and ink painting.

Furyo and Mishu respected each other and engaged in friendly competition. Mishu praised Furuji, his senior painter, for "walking honestly on the path that he believed in. On the other hand, Furuji said to the younger Mosyu, "When I think of my friend who was so passionate about art, I feel a sense of respect for him.

This exhibition commemorates the 140th anniversary of Kogei's birth by displaying his masterpieces from his early years to his later years, including "Gokurakui" (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), "Deyu" (Tokyo National Museum), "Kiyohime," "Flame Dance" (Important Cultural Property), "Midori-shiba" (Green moss), and other works that show their interaction and their words. The works and words of the two artists will also be on display. We hope you will enjoy the trajectory of these two genius painters, who inspired each other, were active at the vanguard of their times, and greatly influenced their contemporaries and later generations of painters.
