Japanese painter Koji Matsumura is one of the leading artists in the contemporary Japanese painting world. While a student at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, he studied under Tamako Kataoka, learning the fundamentals of Japanese painting. In the year he entered graduate school, he was selected for the Inten Exhibition for the first time, and since then he has received numerous awards and is currently a member of the Nihon Bijutsu-in coterie and a member of its board of directors.
This exhibition introduces a series of works depicting the sea and life in Tsugaru, which he has visited frequently since his student days; a series of paintings he made in about 30 countries after visiting India and Nepal on his first overseas trip at the age of 30; and a series of works up to the present day depicting the beauty of his hometown Nara and Japan. This retrospective exhibition will showcase works from the past 50 years of Matsumura's career.
