Komura Settai-Seeking Traces of the Faces of Beauty

Artists

Settai Komura
The artist Settai Komura (1887-1940) was known for distinctive contributions to book cover design, illustrations, and stage set design during the Taisho and early Showa periods. Rather than depicting strict realism, Komura created a unique world of beauty. Komura's works evoke the nostalgic charm of the Edo period, emphasizing the graceful figures and dignified expressions of women. This exhibition introduces hand-painted portraits of beautiful women, landscapes, illustrations, original stage set designs, and book covers as possible, divided into early and late periods. Additionally, also on display are items from the museum's collection, including combs, hairpins, and obi sashes, complementing the elegant adornments that adorned the women of that era, which keeps with Komura's pursuit of beauty.
