Miku-chan's special summer journey has been turned into a photo book after 13 years.
Utrecht / Now Idea is holding an exhibition to commemorate the publication of photographer Kotori Kawashima’s photo collection "Vocalise" (Nanaroku-sha). This book features a selection of 118 photos taken in various locations across Europe during the summer of 2011, the same period as the creation of "Miku-chan."
In stark contrast to the location of "Miku-chan" on Sado Island, the book captures Miku-chan in the bright, sunny summer of Europe. The images show her interacting with local children, eating ice cream, playing with animals, running, jumping, and falling. The title "Vocalise" refers to a singing technique that uses only vowel sounds without lyrics. In this new setting, Miku-chan's fresh wonder and confusion before language emerge vividly. Her eyes, absorbing and facing an unfamiliar world, convey the story of one summer more richly than words could.
The beautifully embossed book design is by Shin Sobue, who also worked on "Miku-chan." The photo book "Vocalise" (Nanaroku-sha) will be released in advance at Utrecht on September 3.
