Kukai, from Tado-gun, Sanuki Province, brought esoteric Buddhism from Tang Dynasty China to Japan and had a great influence on Japanese history and culture.

This exhibition introduces the splendid and diverse esoteric Buddhism artworks handed down in Sanuki Prefecture, including masterpieces that convey the warmth of Kukai's personality, as well as works such as Mikagei, biographies, and story paintings created and handed down in the spread of Kobo Daishi faith based on strong admiration for Kukai, while also touching on the aspects of Buddhist art in Sanuki before and after Kukai's birth. The exhibition also touches on aspects of Buddhist art in Sanuki around the time of Kukai's birth.
