Seiki Kuroda et al.
In 2024, the Kagoshima City Museum of Art celebrates its 70th anniversary since its opening and marks the centenary of the passing of Seiki Kuroda (1866-1924). Born in Kagoshima City, Kuroda initially pursued legal studies but redirected his path to painting while studying abroad in France. Under the tutelage of Raphael Collin, a leader of the plein-air movement, he conducted outdoor painting in the lush surroundings of the Paris suburbs. Upon his return to Japan, the bright and fresh oil painting techniques he learned in France sparked a new wave in Japan's Western art scene. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Kuroda also contributed significantly to art education and administration, dedicating his life to promoting Japanese art.

Kuroda's legacy is intertwined with the founding of the Kagoshima City Museum of Art in 1954. This exhibition, the first comprehensive presentation in his hometown since 2002, reflects on his journey from multiple perspectives. It features masterpieces by Kuroda held by institutions such as the Tokyo National Museum, along with works by related artists.
