On the opening day of Kyoko Shindo's exhibition "Märchen," there will be a small opening reception with the artist starting from 5:00 PM.
While majoring in oil painting at Tama Art University, Shindo found that oil paints didn't suit her constitution, leading her to create works themed around the activities of living beings using watercolor, exploiting the watercolor's natural bleeding effect. Always experimenting with new artistic materials, she finally found materials that suited her constitution in recent years, leading her to shift to oil painting as her expressive medium. As a result, her painted world now has concrete backgrounds, offering a more profound expression. Unlike traditional oil paintings, her works charm viewers with the freedom of brushwork and bold strokes honed in watercolor.
For this exhibition, Shindo chose the theme Märchen. The inspiration for this theme came from her realization that the casual conversations children have, mixing reality with fantasy and wishes, create a world different from actuality. The landscapes within a forest, the children, and animals that appear in her recent works depict scenes that seem real yet narrate a story as if saying, "Once upon a time in a place far, far away." The figures standing in nature likely remain unchanged, shrouded in mystery, both in the past and present.
The showcased works in this exhibition vividly depict the colors of plants, combining with Shindo's distinctive expressions of trees to exude beauty and eeriness, creating a more mysterious world.
