Kyosai and Kyosui: The World of Story Paintings

Kawanabe Kyosai Memorial Museum
Finished

Artists

Kyosai Kawanabe, Kyosui Kawanabe
The exhibition broadly interprets story paintings and presents works depicting anecdotes of historical figures from ancient to modern times. Featured in this category are hand-painted pieces such as "Painting of Momotaro Conquering Demon Island" by Kyosai and "Murasaki Shikibu and Sei Shonagon" by Kyosui, alongside Kyosai's ukiyo-e prints of "The Journey to the West," which incorporate a satirical narrative layer.

In the third exhibition room, a special exhibition is being held featuring panels showcasing famous anecdotes and illustrations from "Kyosai Gadan," a publication that recounts episodes from Kyosai's own life, compiled by Masayasu Uryu (aka Kinga Baitei), and illustrated by Kyosai.
