Kyoto Interchange is an art institution established in Kyoto to maximize the aesthetic and social roles of artists. Since its establishment in 2022, it has continued to hold ambitious exhibitions and events, including "Sajik Kim, Mayunkiki, Makiko Yamamoto," "Koki Tanaka," "Kanayo Ueda," and "Teppei Kaneuji Chihiro Mori."

The fifth part of this series will feature Aiko Tezuka. Tezuka is a contemporary artist active worldwide based in Japan and Berlin and is known for her unique method of using weaving and embroidery to unravel the irreversible structure of paintings. The woven and embroidered works that Tezuka spent a vast amount of time unraveling physically reconstruct as a beautiful arrangement, but what appears there is not only the structure. Unraveling and reweaving threads is not only about the physical reconstruction but also about tracing and reweaving the systems and histories that have shaped them. It is an attempt to connect past events and the present by tracing the time of those who spun the thread, the overlap of images, and the history embedded in the fabric.

The exhibition will unfold around the new woven work "Open and Closed and About Courage." This large-scale new work incorporates layers of items and images generated by AI through emojis, words, and items collected and researched by Tezuka in Dejima, Nagasaki, and Leiden, the Netherlands. The relationship between Nagasaki Dejima and the Netherlands began when the Dutch trading post moved from Hirado to Dejima in 1641, and trade continued for over 200 years. It is said that silk, especially European-origin woolen fabrics, was an important imported product. Also, this work was produced through collaboration with Kyoto Nishijin's studio (Kaji Orimono), which has high technical skills in weaving. Kyoto Nishijin is a representative production area of high-quality silk textiles in Japan, and this project is also a technical attempt to develop new textiles through collaboration with these craftsmen. Tezuka, who has exhibited around the world and consciously used ready-made textiles in the field of contemporary art, has continued to explore the relationship between Japan and Western Europe, art and craft (or decoration). The results of Tezuka's ongoing efforts in her voyage of opening and closing will be presented at this exhibition.
