Held with the support of the Embassy of Italy in Japan, this exhibition commemorates the 160th anniversary of the signing of the Japan-Italy treaty of amity and commerce and the 550th anniversary of the death of Simonetta. It features Beautiful Simonetta, a tempera painting by Sandro Botticelli (1445–1510) from the Marubeni Collection and the only work by the artist in Japan.

In Botticelli’s time, painting was not only a way to depict the visible world, but also a means of offering a glimpse into the invisible. The exhibition focuses on two literary works from Italy and Japan in which Simonetta appears, Poliziano’s Stanzas After The Tournament and Kunio Tsuji’s The Coronation of Spring as well as Botticelli’s masterpiece Primavera.
