Lacquer Kosai and Shogun Mokian: Blooming Lacquer Culture in Matsue

Matsue History Museum
Finished
The first Kojima Shitsukosai (?-1830) was a lacquer painter appointed by Fumai Matsudaira, the 7th lord of the Matsudaira family of the Matsue domain. The works of the Kojima family, whose family business has been lacquer art for generations, are characterized by their lacquer and dignified lacquer work and are highly appreciated nationwide. Among them, the tea utensils created by Shikkosai I have been handed down with great care in various places as items that convey the aesthetic sense of Fumai.
Nurude Anmitsuhide (1802–71) was the maki-e master of Matsudaira Naritaka, the ninth lord of the Matsudaira clan of the Matsue domain. Mitsuhide specializes in gorgeous takamaki-e, and has left behind many works such as jujubes, incense cases, inro, inkstone cases, and writing stands.
In this exhibition, we will introduce the works of famous Izumo master craftsmen and look back on the lacquerware culture of the Matsue domain.
