Machiko Hasegawa loved animals and kept many animals throughout her life, including dogs, cats, birds, and squirrels. Her love for animals is well expressed in her work, such as her manga. She also published picture books with lively depictions of animals from Sisters, a publishing company she founded herself. Animals are also an indispensable part of the main characters' families and sidekicks in her masterpieces "Sazae-san," "Auntie Apron," and “Ijiwaru Granny.” Hasegawa’s life was always accompanied by animals, as she enjoyed drawing paintings of animals in her private life.
