Maki-e Exhibition: The Thousand Year Story of Lacquer and Gold

The Tokugawa Art Museum
Finished
Maki-e, a technique in which a design is drawn in lacquer and sprinkled with gold or silver powder, has long been a symbol of ideal beauty in Japanese culture. This exhibition introduces a selection of maki-e masterpieces from the Heian period (794-1185), a Kamakura period (1185-1333) handbasket, the National Treasure "Hatsune Maki-e Chodo," a representative of maki-e of the Edo period, Rimpa school style maki-e, and works by master craftsmen active from the Edo to modern periods, as well as contemporary works by living national treasures. In addition, the exhibition will also include the National Treasure "The Tale of Genji" and other story scrolls, folding screens, and calligraphy, tracing the lineage of beauty pursued by the Japanese people.
This exhibition is a joint project of the MOA Museum of Art, the Mitsui Memorial Museum of Art, and the Tokugawa Art Museum.
