Maki-e Exhibition - The Thousand-Year Tale of Lacquer and Gold

Maki-e, the art of drawing pictures in lacquer and sprinkling gold or silver powder on them to create patterns, has long been a symbol of ideal beauty in Japanese culture. This exhibition, jointly organized by the MOA Museum of Art, the Mitsui Memorial Museum, and the Tokugawa Art Museum, will present a total of 188 works, including 25 National Treasures and 51 Important Cultural Properties, ranging from the Heian period to contemporary lacquer work by lacquer craft artists, at the three venues.

The Mitsui Memorial Museum of Art will exhibit a total of 127 works, including 7 National Treasures and 32 Important Cultural Properties. The exhibition includes the National Treasure "Hatsune Maki-e Furnishings" (owned by the Tokugawa Art Museum), the National Treasure "Sawa Chidori Raden Maki-e Small Karabitsu" (owned by Kongobuji Temple, Koyasan), which shows the completion of Heian period Japanese style design, hand boxes from the Kamakura period, Rimpa school style maki-e, work by master makers active in the Edo period and modern era, and other masterpieces representing each period, plus contemporary living national treasures.

In addition, the exhibition will also feature picture scrolls and screens, including the national treasure "Tale of Genji" (owned by the Tokugawa Art Museum), as well as Buddhist scriptures and calligraphy, tracing the lineage of beauty pursued by the Japanese people.
