Born in Malaga, based in Madrid, Manuel Franquelo is one of the leading contemporary Spanish artists. He initially made his name in the field of painting with his astonishingly detailed depictions and he attracted attention as an up-and-coming artist of the next generation.
Since the end of the 2000s, he has switched his paintbrush to a digital camera and moved on to new projects, including a solo exhibition of his photographic works entitled "Things in a Room" (Marlborough Gallery, NY), which was held in New York in 2015, and which transcended his commitment to expressive techniques. Franquelo's profound artistic philosophy, which transcended his preoccupation with expressive techniques, was revealed.
In the process of this drastic change, Franquelo introduced a series of prints, "The Language of Things," in 2002. For about 10 years prior to this, Franquelo had been regularly photographing the miscellaneous objects in his studio with a Polaroid camera, as if he were keeping a diary. Even the slightest change in the landscape is an important part of his daily life.
These 14 etchings, printed on Japanese paper, are based on Polaroid photographs and concentrate on Franquelo's keen observation of the everyday. Although a small series, "The Language of Things" is an important project that is filled with Franquelo's ideas.
