Manuscripts from the Naito Collection in the National Museum of Western Art

Sapporo Art Park
Finished
In medieval Europe, books (manuscripts) were created by transcribing text onto parchment made from animal skins. The production of these manuscripts was a collaborative effort: scribes would first copy the text in a standardized script, and then illuminators would decorate the margins and the initial letters with vibrant illustrations. For monasteries and churches, producing and managing manuscripts were crucial duties. The manuscripts, which took a long time to complete, were treasured and passed down as heirlooms to support people's faith and as important media for transmitting knowledge to future generations.

This exhibition will showcase approximately 140 items from the Naito Collection, housed at the National Museum of Western Art, including Bibles, Books of Hours, and antiphonaries. Most of these items date from the 13th to the 16th centuries and have been preserved as single leaves detached from their original books. Each piece is accompanied by illustrated panels to help visitors gain a deeper and more enjoyable understanding of the world of manuscripts.
