Mother in Memory is an exhibition by sisters Mao Sakurada (photography) and Rio Sakurada (painting and drawing), presented to mark the first anniversary of their mother’s death. Following her sudden passing, the two artists spent a year preparing this exhibition. During her lifetime, their mother did not wish to appear in photographs. Grounded in this absence, the exhibition explores themes of memory and absence through photography, painting, and drawing. The exhibition presents photographic works, paintings, drawings, and fragments of photographs left by their mother. The exhibition opens with a prologue at Gallery Iro in Tokyo in February 2026 and will subsequently be presented as the main chapter at the Aomori Museum of Art (Community Gallery A & B).
